Mentoring Artists for Women's Art (MAWA) began by offering mentorship to emerging and mid-career artists in 1984. Since then, programs have been added and new initiatives have been undertaken. MAWA recently marked 20 years of mentorship in 2005.

Mentorship is at the core of MAWA. MAWA has sustained the initial Foundation Mentorship program since 1985 and has added mid-career mentorship programs through artist residencies and long distance mentorships. Here MAWA members, Aganetha Dyck, Reva Stone and Erika Lincoln, part of a "chain of mentorship" since 1985 discuss their experiences.

MAWA has created programs that expand the community of artists - here the Aboriginal liason group AWAM (Aboriginal Woman and Mentorship) meet at MAWA with an elder for a pipe ceremony.

MAWA publishes newsletters and books that focus on women and art. These publications give writers, curators and artists opportunities write and to publish their work.

MAWA hosts symposiums every few years. The symposiums deal with issues relevant to MAWA members.
