Incorporated in 1881 the Saint John Bridge and Railway Company was created to build a railway bridge across the St. John River to connect the terminus of the Intercolonial Railway in East Saint John with the terminus of the Western Extension line in West Saint John. The cantilever-type railway bridge, and the railway line which ran from Fairville Station, on the Intercolonial line, across the bridge to the station on Mill Street, were both opened in 1885. Prior to this, freight and passengers moving from one railway to the other had to be moved across the river by ferry or the highway bridge. The bridge was replaced in 1921 to accommodate heavier trains.
