Husband to Mabel Vandette married for 65 years and father of three boys and three girls. At first he spent a lot of time away doing contract work in Kitchener and Southern Ontario and various surrounding areas. Later he worked in Pembroke, Ontario, where they lived in Golden Lake and started the first confectionary store in the community. He was a business man, carpenter, for a short time a Band Councilor and a teacher. He taught Stanley Sarazin and Percy Commanda the craft of canoe building.

Matt Bernard taught the craft of canoe building to his son Mike Bernard and in one of the pictures to follow- you can see Mike embrassing one of the huge ribs for the massive canoe.
