George Robinson

George Robinson was born at Millerton, N.B. in 1904 and at the age of nine the family moved to Doaktown. He married Rhoda Beck in 1925 and five children were born from this union.

George began his guiding career in the early 1920's for Ira Gruber and later Edward Gruber. A short time later he was employed by Dr. MacDonald of Blissfield at the Hoyt Camps which are known as the Miramichi Salmon Club. He guided hunters and fishermen on the Cains River at Hopewell Lodge which was operated by Mrs. Cleve Price, as well as for Tom Boyd at Mountain Channel, Grey Rapids.

George guided black salmon fishermen at the Miramichi Anglers Lodge for a number of years and in the 1960's he added the caretaking duties at these camps.

He retired in the 1970's and enjoyed occasional hunting and fishing trips. George passed away in June 1989 at the age of 85 years.

Herbert Wade

Herbie was born in Penniac, N.B. on December 8, 1919 and worked with his father Charlie for many years as a guide and co-owner of Wade's Fishing Lodge. Herbie is considered one of the best in the outfitting business and as such has catered to royalty, corporate heads and lesser known personalities. He is very much in demand by curling clubs and various community organizations for his famous "Cains River pancakes."

For many years Herbie has been active in the promotion of conservation and enhancement of the Atlantic Salmon and as a member and delegate of the Miramichi Salmon Association and N.B. Outfitters, he has debated long and hard with the Federal and Provincial authorities in defense of his great game fish. Herbie is also a Member and Director of the Miramichi Salmon Museum.

In 1984 Herbie was awarded the "Silver Medallion for Tourism" in recognition of his outstanding contribution to tourism. Only one of these awards is given annually to a deserving Canadian. In 1988 Herbie celebrated the 50th anniversary of Wade's Fishing Lodge as hundreds of his friends joined him for the occasion.

Herbie is well liked and respected by all with whom he has been associated and has never lost the common touch.

Katherine Lillian Bamford

Katherine Lillian Bamford (April 5, 1913 - April 2, 1989) was born in Doaktown, New Brunswick to William Albert and Annie Mitchell Bamford, and became a Patron of the Miramichi Salmon Museum posthumously.

Katherine attended Normal School and the University of New Brunswick before entering the teaching profession. After devoting 35 years to her chosen career, she retired and returned to Doaktown. She later moved to Fredericton, where she died in 1989.

Katherine was a dedicated member of the Central Miramichi Historical Society, which was directly responsible for the construction of the Miramichi Salmon Museum.

Katherine was a provisional director of the Museum and later served as an honorary director. She was a member of the Gift Shop Committee and spent many hours making and selling chocolates to help finance many of the Museum's kitchen items.

In addition to being a Patron of the Museum, Katherine provided major contributions to the Audio-Visual Theatre and other projects.

Katherine was held in great respect by members of the Board of Directors and the Museum will always be indebted to her for her role as a benefactor.

Louise Mitchell Bamford

Louise Mitchell Bamford was born April 6, 1916 in Doaktown, New Brunswick to William Albert and Annie Mitchell Bamford, and became a Patron of the Miramichi Salmon Museum posthumously.

Louise received two degrees from Mount Allison University - Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and Bachelor of Education. She taught school for a while before engaging in course work in Dietetics at the Toronto General Hospital. Louise then returned to teaching, which she pursued until retirement in 1983.

Always interested in preserving the heritage of the area, Louise played a major role in establishing the Miramichi Salmon Museum and was elected to the first Board of Directors. Louise is a Patron of the Museum and serves on the Gift Shop Committee. Her publication, "The Bamford Saga" can be found in the Gift Shop. She has given generously to all major projects undertaken by the Museum, in particular the Audio-Visual Theatre.

In 1989 in memory of her sister Kay, Louise installed an audio-treatment system which depicts the sounds one hears along the river. As well, in 1990, Louise initiated a Museum Trust Fund.

Louise continues to serve untiringly and the Board is deeply appreciative of her interest and support.

Wilfred M. Carter

Wilfred M. Carter, B.Sc., D.Sc.

Dr. Wilfred Carter is a professional fish and wildlife biologist who, following a lengthy and highly successful career as a senior level administrator with the Province of Quebec, became in 1968, the founding Executive Director of the International Atlantic Salmon Foundation (subsequently the Atlantic Salmon Federation).

In Canada and abroad, Dr. Carter is widely recognized as being in the forefront of the Atlantic salmon conservation. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Atlantic Salmon Trust (U.K.), Canadian commissioner to the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO), former chairman of the Fisheries Development Board for the Province of New Brunswick, as well as being a member of a number of professional organizations in Canada, United States, and Europe. Dr. Carter is the recipient of numerous conservation and public service awards, along with serving as a director of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and as a director of the Council for Canadian Unity.

Robert Coburn was a fisherman all his life. He lived with his family in Maine until 1925. Robert started fishing the Miramichi with Billy Price during the spring seasons of the early 1930's. In 1934, he discovered the Mike Murray property at Upper Blackville bridge while riding an ice flow down river: he purchased the property soon after. Robert was an avid fisherman and the Miramichi was his second home.

Audrey MacKinnon, born in Plaster Rock, N.B. on October 30, 1925, is the daughter of Helen Murphy and the late Leonard C. Robertson

Audrey was educated at the Plaster Rock High School and came to Doaktown in 1943 after graduating from Secretarial School. She worked for several years at Lounsbury's. After her marriage to Bill MacKinnon, she worked with him at both Stedman's and in his forestry business.

Audrey volunteered her time to many local organizations, acting as either President, Secretary or Treasurer of each one. She was an charter member of the Central Miramichi Historical Society in 1983, and is now Honorary President. She was appointed to the N.B. Bicentennial Commission in 1984 as liaison for this area.

As President of the Central Miramichi Historical Society, (the group directly responsible for establishing the Miramichi Salmon Museum), Audrey spent many hours writing letters, preparing briefs and petitions, and meeting with government officials seeking funding for the Museum. With the aid of a friend, Roger Nason of Fredericton, she personally delivered the first petition to Premier Hatfield's desk.

Along with husband Bill, she became a Patron of the Museum, and sat on the first Board of Directors. She still serves on the Board and also on the Executive as Assistant-Secretary.

William R. MacKinnon

William Russel MacKinnon, born in Newcastle, N.B. on October 26, 1925 to Violet E. Russell and the late William Robert MacKinnon.

Bill has lived most of his adult life in Doaktown. He was educated at Doaktown Elementary School, Mount Allison College, the University of New Brunswick and Fredericton Business College. He also served in the R.C.A.F.

Upon completing his education, he entered the forestry business and since 1956 has owned and operated W.R. MacKinnon Ltd. and MacKinnon Enterprises Ltd. He was a pioneer in the field of cultivated Christmas trees and for fifteen years owned and operated the local Stedman's Store.

Always interested in his community, he has served on the Executive of almost every organization in the Village and still remains active on several. His interest in the Central Miramichi Historical Society led directly to his involvement in helping establish the Miramichi Salmon Museum. Being an avid fisherman and wishing to see our heritage preserved, he donated the site for the Museum and acted as a Provisional Director. He served on the Building Committee and sat on the Board of Directors as its first President. Both he and his company, W.R. MacKinnon Ltd., became Patrons. He has given generously to all major Museum projects, including the Audio Visual System. Bill is still actively involved in the Museum activities, serving on several Committees, and sits on the Executive as Treasurer.

In 1990, he was awarded a Certificate of Distinction from the Association Museums New Brunswick for his efforts in the heritage field.

Bill will long be remembered for his faithful service and his role as a Benefactor.
