The Atlantic Salmon Museum, located in the heart of the Miramichi at Doaktown, was established in 1983. It captures, through its exhibits and displays, the influences and traditions established by the Atlantic salmon fishery. More importantly, the Museum recognizes the cultural and economic importance of sport fishing to all New Brunswickers.

In addition to numerous artifacts and displays, visitors can view an audio-visual presentation, which colorfully depicts the joys of Atlantic salmon fishing and the beauty of the Miramichi River. As well, we feature an aquarium, which contains Atlantic salmon, brook trout and other fish common to the Miramichi watershed.

The Museum's Aquarium plays an important roll in the education of school children within the Province of New Brunswick as part of the Atlantic Salmon Federation's "Fish Friends Program". Children in Grades 4 to 6 have the opportunity to raise fish in their classrooms while learning about the ecology of the Atlantic salmon. These children then return their fish to the river system from which they came.

Thus approximately 800 school children release their fish into the Miramichi River in front of the Museum, tour the Museum, and especially the Aquarium where they can see live Atlantic salmon in various stages of growth.
