The Sommerville Granary was built by Robert Somerville, who also built the agricultural display building on the upper level of the museum site, called the Bishop Barn. Mr. Somerville also cut 1200 of the original rails for the split rail fence that surrounds the museum. These were moved from George's farm in the winter of 1973. Other rails to finish the project were donated by John and Burton Dunlop.

The Somerville Granary is a square, two story building that was moved from a piece of property owned by George Bishop, adjacent to Red Lodge.

Acquired in late 1973, plans for reconstruction were held up until 1974 because of lack of funds and weather conditions. It was erected in 1974 and opened to the public on June 1, 1974.

Robert Somerville was born in Ontario in 1851, to Thomas and Mary (Campbell) Somerville. The name Sommerville is spelled both ways, on the Ontario Vital records. He married Angusina McKay, the daughter of Angus and Mary (Bays) McKay. They had five daughters, Mae, Mable, Ida, Myrtle and Grace.
