The Sheguiandah Women's Institute celebrated its 90th Anniversary in 2002, and it had lots to celebrate.
Besides surviving for 90 years as an organization, the Sheguiandah Women's Institute was celebrating the changes they had brought to the small community of Sheguiandah over the years. In actuality, the WI in Sheguiandah was first formed in 1908, on the 12th of June. That organization was short lived, disbanding just one year later in 1909.
Since reorganizing on June 1, 1912 the Sheguiandah Women's Institute has served its community well.

In honouring the Sheguiandah Women's Institute at its 70th Anniversary celebration in 1982, Ella Smith, the Institute's curator listed as one of their finest accomplishments their involvement of fundraising for the Little Current-Howland Centennial Museum. Their little group had sold cookbooks to raise funds to start the building fund in 1965 and raised over $1000.

The first President of the newly formed Sheguiandah WI was Mrs. George Armstrong.
In 1987, during the celebration of their 75th Anniversary, Curator Ella Smith outlined some of the good work that had been done by the Institute.
They made quilts for families in times of distress. They gave packages of food and home made socks and mitts to poor families at Christmas. They paid for swimming and skating lessons for local children and gave prizes for school fairs.
During WW2, the Sheguiandah WI sent comfort boxes to every young man from the community. They did sewing and knitting for the Red Cross, and in 1957 convinced the local government that the Village of Sheguiandah needed street lights.
In 1965, the Sheguiandah Women's Institute raised $1000.00 to start a fund to build a museum.

Two of the Institute members, Ella Lewis and Geraldine Batman donated the land for the new museum and all of the members volunteered their time to see it built.
