From payroll to production the mine manager is like a thread which holds the fine fabric of a mine together. In early years the mine manager was often the owner and founder of the mineral deposit and through his leadership riches could be made or lost in the blink of an eye. These early managers were often blind to long term production, environmental concerns, and worker safety. Mark Twain once maintained that "a mine is a hole in the ground with a liar on top," an unflattering view which supported the common belief that mines were prospective derelicts operated by neglectful prospectors. The mine manager of today is a highly respected person who is concerned with the overall success of his operation. It is his job to ensure maximum production of the mine in both the short and long term in a cost effective and efficient manner. The manager provides leadership and direction to his employees and ensures that policies are in place to protect the environment and provide a safe working enironment for his employees.
