Families were an important element in the everyday life of the community. The bigger the family meant that there would be more people to help with the many chores of early life. Many of the early houses in the community were two story buildings, with upstairs bedrooms for sleeping accommodations. The houses were usually built big enough to hold large families, sometimes with as many as 10 children or more. They usually had a large front veranda for sitting or working. This would have been especially helpful in the heat of the summer, when all the cooking had to be done on wood burning stove in the kitchen.
