Dr. Perley Staples Brown was a very ambitious and talented man that became the first doctor in the town East Coulee. Prior to that he had fought in the Boer War and once acbk in Canada he built houses for a living. He was working in Drumheller and area building homes and was very proud of the work he did when using bricks to buld the entire home. At the same time, he worked part time in the pharmacy in Drumheller and decided he wanted to become a pharmacist. Studying in his spare time he challenged the exams at the university of Alberta in Edmonton and passed with flying colors. After then buying the pharmacy he decided he wanted to become a doctor. Moving to Montreal with his family, in his early 40's, and he completed his degree at McGill and then moved back to East Coulee to start a practice. he was under sontract for the UMWA and this brought him a decen tincome and brought the people of East Coulee a dedicated and excellent doctor. During his speare time he found clay that was suitable for making bricks. he developed a chaving cream using bentonite clay and soapstone from local mines. His contract with the UMWA ended after a misunderstanding and he moved away from to pursue more adventures. For a period of time he had a practice in small town of Forest Lawn (now part of Calgary and the place where many of the homes from East Coulee were moved when the mines cloased). He lived at least until the age of 92 though his final resting place is not known.
