CHAPTER 1:
The Town of Point Leamington

Founded in 1870, because of its fishing grounds and its magnificent pine forest and the most accessible shoreline of Notre Dame Bay. Incorporated in 1970, the Town of Point Leamington is highly recommended on the list of places to visit. The serenity of a small, quaint, quiet town, nestled amongst the trees, overlooking the harbor, and hosting very friendly people.

The Mill River is one of our most cherished possessions. A beautiful sight to see but it has also generated a rich cultural heritage for this community. This community began because of the rivers supply of salmon and today it still supplies salmon to recreational anglers from all over. Today it is also a swimming pool for the community.

The Western Arm River is another salmon river, just fifteen minutes from town.

The Point Leamington Heritage Interpretation Center is located on the banks of the Mill River. There you can browse through the gift shop, learn about our local history through photos, videos documents, artifacts, etc. Take a minute to relax and have a cup of tea/coffee in Aunt Ethel's Kitchen, or take your tea/coffee outside and enjoy the view of the river from the gazebo.

The Rowsell's Hill Hiking Trail meanders along the Mill River and offers some breath-taking views. Continue on and you will find Jacob's Ladder. A stairway of 386 steps which will lead you up to the Lookout. (This portion of the trail we recommend for the more advanced hikers). At the Lookout, you can sit and enjoy a lunch at the picnic area, view Point Leamington and surrounding areas through you may even see some wild game (moose, rabbit).

If you enjoy nature trails, the town also offers a 1.5km boardwalk trail that circles around Otter Pond. There you can witness the beauty of the forest as well, and may also see some wildlife, (especially beaver). Picnic areas are also provided throughout the trail.

If you enjoy boating, launch your boat at one of the launch sites and spend a day on the water, explore Notre Dame Bay, stop in on one of the beautiful beaches and have a cook-up. Depending on the opening of the food fishery, you may be lucky enough to catch your own fish to cook.
