In 2002, the old Gooderham and Worts Distillery, which had stopped alcohol production in about 1990, opened its doors to the public as the new Distillery Historic District. Guided by a novel and elaborate plan to redevelop the entire neighbourhood as a vibrant residential and commercial centre, the distillery would be a centrepiece of adaptive reuse in which an old industrial site would become home to an arts and entertainment facility. The plan included the construction of new condominiums, as well renovating distillery buildings to accomodate galleries, restaurants, theatres, studio/retail spaces for artists and more.
