The first couple of decades of the 20th century witnessed huge changes for Gooderham & Worts. Most dramatic among the external forces were World War I, and Prohibition. During this time, the distillery altered its operations, first to contribute specialized alcohols that could be used in the war effort, and secondly to respond to new regulations related to prohibition - a topic that is covered in another part of this program.

Relatively few of the people who purchased the products of Gooderham and Worts knew anything about the distillery itself. Rather, they knew it through the bottles, kegs, labels, posters, advertisements, etc., that G&W used to help raise the profile of the company and its products. There are few surviving objects from the early days of the distillery, however, in the following images and their accompanying texts help to illuminate the G&W story.
