This grinder was used to shape and smooth workpieces. There is a coarse and a fine stone, the coarse for removing metal quickly and the fine one for a smoother finish.

Drill press

This drill press was used fo bore holes in metal. Like the trip hammer and the grinder, it was powered by a belt running on a common shaft.

Drill press gearing

19

The speed of the drill could be varied by adjusting the gears.Generally speaking, a larger bit would require that a lower speed be used. All the open gears and drive belts show the differences in safety legislation between our era and the hayday of the smithy.
