Elizabeth Tinline, whose father was also a teacher, was born in 1847 near Temperanceville, and taught in 5 of King Township's schools, during a career that lasted over 30 years. In a newspaper interview in 1941 she recalled that as many as 6 students occupied a desk in her time and is quoted as saying about the crowding in her class, "at times I had 100 pupils on the roll during the winter months." It is well known that many children where removed from school to help with planting and harvest chores in the spring and fall.

One of Miss Tinline's "star scholars" was Walter Rolling, who followed in her footsteps as a teacher and was Principal of Kinghorn School in a career that lasted 41 years. (1895-1936) My Rolling's family came from Virginia and settled in Laskay around the end of 1830's. His father operated a general store and was one of the first black postmasters in Ontario when appointed in 1888. After graduating from Miss Tinline's class in Laskay, Mr. Rolling went on to Normal School in Newmarket. As a male teacher his starting salary in 1895 was at least $100.00 more than his former teacher (who was of course female) was earning. Walter Rolling taught as many as three generations of some families and his resignation was felt throughout the community.

It is not surprising then that 2000 grateful past students and friends honored his contribution to the community at a special "Walter Rolling Day" held in 1937.
His former teacher Miss Tinline was in attendance that June day in 1937, as was former Kinghorn teacher Miss Alice Ferguson, who lauded his accomplishments in a farewell speech. She said "you were not only a teacher, but a Psychologist, working for the future of your pupils, up building character, developing the best in them, that their future citizenship may be high and of noble proportions." This speech indicates the high moral standards that were part of education system.
