In October of 1967, the first ever Shrum Bowl was played between the Thunderbirds and Simon Fraser University (SFU). The Shrum Bowl was in honour of Dr. Gordon Shrum who was a former UBC professor and inaugural SFU chancellor. In the first Shrum Bowl SFU defeated UBC 32-13.

During the 1970s, UBC continued their success from the previous decade. Their best season in the 1970s was in the 1978 season when UBC went 10-3. Even though that was their best record in the decade, they did not even win the Hardy Cup.

During the 1976 season, UBC went 6-5 and 10-3 during the 1978 season. In 1978 UBC went on to another Churchill Bowl. The opponent in the Churchill Bowl was the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. At the end of the game, UBC defeated the Golden Hawks 25-16 and advanced to their first ever Canadian College Bowl (now it is called the Vanier Cup). Their Canadian College Bowl opponent that year was the Queen's Golden Gaels, who defeated UBC 16-3. With that loss in the Canadian College Bowl, UBC head coach Frank Smith became the first UBC head coach to earn Coach of the Year honours.

In the 1980s, people around the UBC program claim that the 1980s was the best decade in history for the Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds best record in that decade was during the 1982 season, when UBC went 12-0, their second undefeated season in school history. With that record, UBC went on to win another Hardy Cup, and went to play the St. Francis Xavier X-Men in their first ever Atlantic Bowl. Much like the previous games that UBC played that season, the Thunderbirds went on to beat the X-Men 54-1. With the Atlantic Bowl victory, the Thunderbirds went on to challenge the Western Mustangs in the Vanier Cup.

In their second go-around at the Vanier Cup, UBC won the Vanier Cup when they defeated Western 39-14 for their first Vanier Cup victory in school history.

In 1986, UBC returned to the Vanier Cup. First, UBC won their 13th Hardy Cup for being the best team in Western Canada, and went to the Churchill Bowl to play the Bishop's Gaiters. In the Churchill Bowl, UBC defeated the Gaiters 32-20 and returned to the Vanier Cup where they played the Western Mustangs again, and much like the previous time they met, UBC defeated the Mustangs on the last play of the game when UBC quarterback Eric Putoto threw a pass to Rob Ros for the touchdown and the 25-23 victory.

During the 1987 season, UBC once again returned to the Vanier Cup, after defeating Wilfrid Laurier in the Churchill Bowl. The Thunderbirds opponent in the Vanier Cup was McGill University. UBC could not capture their second straight Vanier Cup as McGill won 47-11. Even with loss in the Vanier Cup, Quarterback, Jordan Gagner won the Hec Crighton trophy for being the most outstanding player in the CIAU that season, the first in UBC history.

The Thunderbirds next set of trophies came in 1997, when UBC went on to capture their last Hardy Cup in the century. With that Hardy Cup victory, UBC once again went to the Atlantic Bowl and faced the Atlantic Canada Champions the Mount Allison Mounties. In the Atlantic Bowl, UBC went on to defeat the Mounties 34-29 and went on to the Vanier Cup playing the Ottawa Gee Gees.

In that game, the Thunderbirds went on to capture their third Vanier Cup by defeating the Gee Gee's 39-23. Also during the 1997 season, UBC had another Hec Crighton winner. This season it was running back Mark Nohra. From their time UBC started playing collegiate football in 1924, the Thunderbirds captured 23 championships.
