Boy Scouts

Scouting began in Grand Falls in 1910 and was started by Hubert Blackall, a scoutmaster. He was a school teacher and the son of Dr. Blackall, who was superintendent of education for the Church of England schools in Newfoundland.

Scout camps were held each summer at different places such as Peters River, Notre Dame Junction, Point Leamington and in later years, Goodyear's Cove.

Girl Guides

Scouting began in Grand Falls in 1910 but it wasn't until 13 years later that a similar movement for girls got a foothold. It was in that year that a Girl Guide trainer from England, Nora Bright, was visiting her sister, Gwendolyn Cooper, at Grand Falls. During that visit, Miss Bright and Mrs. Cooper met with Lady Aldardyce, the Girl Guide Commissioner for Newfoundland, at the Log House to form a local association, and Mrs. Cooper became the first Girl Guide president.

First Stores

The first grocery and dry goods store was operated by the A.N.D. Company, the profits from which went back into the community. The store was taken over in 1911 by the Royal Sores at the request of the company. Other stores opening up at that same time or shortly thereafter were Chancey and Poole's Dry Goods Store, Woods Candy Store and Grand Falls Drug Store. There was Spurrell's Tailor Shop and Sparkes' Barber Shop, bookending the complex called the Columbus House.

First Taxi

The first taxi service was started by Josiah Goodyear in 1908, and by 1910, it had grown to 10 horse-drawn Victoria carriages, with two full-width upholstered seats for passengers, a collapsible hood giving some protection to its occupants and a high seat for the unprotected driver.
