The Scott House

The Scott farm house still stands today on Progress Avenue, now the home of The Old Scott House Restaurant. The home was built in 1841 in the Georgian style with stones gathered from George Scott's field. George was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, in 1795. In 1829 he purchased a two hundred acre lot that extended from Ellesmere Road to Sheppard Avenue.

"There's a wonderful building and still is, the Civic Centre. It was designed by Moriyama, who did the Central Toronto Library and various other places around town, and I've always loved it! They have beautiful concerts there every Sunday, you know, there's Jazz sometimes, and sometimes there is Folk, or Military Bands, Major Falconi and his Artillery Band, or whatever it is, all kinds of different things, you know. It was traditionally sponsored in part by the City and by the Musicians Union, and all the best musicians in Toronto have been through there. It's a shame that people don't realize - they go downtown and they pay $50 to see somebody, you could go up there and watch for 2 hours for free".
