For reading and relaxation, a chaise longue would have been desirable. This example, originally covered in leather, was brought to Saskatchewan in 1915 by Donald and Amy McLean. They moved from Hespeler, Ontario as Amy suffered from smog-related asthma. Pieces of furniture such as this were typically well used.

A decorative oak hall table likely served many purposes. It may have been used to showcase an ornament collection or perhaps to support a lamp. The McLeans brought this table from Hespeler, Ontario in 1915.

A "Gone with the Wind" lamp may have graced a corner or hall table. The one featured here is 60 cm tall and has a brass base. It came to the prairies from Stillwater, Minnesota with Joe and Emma Leslie in 1911.

This writing desk is special in a number of ways. Being portable, it could have been used in a variety of locations within the home or elsewhere. It has a hinged top which, when opened, reveals a fabric covered writing surface, an inkwell and some storage compartments. Also, a handle on each side which could be made flush when not in use, made carrying the piece convenient. It originally came from England.

Purchased secondhand by William and Mary Robinson in Cedar Falls, Iowa, this bed was part of a bedroom set which included a dresser and washstand. The Robinsons emigrated from the United States to Canada in 1911. Their effects, including the bed, other household wares and livestock were transported by rail in freight cars.

Quilting was one way for women to use scrap material in a practical way. This pinwheel patterned quilt was made from men's ties during the late 1800's by Emma and Matie Schroeder. It came from Stillwater, Minnesota in 1911 by rail with a load of other settlers' effects. Certainly a quilt such as this would have been treasured on a cold, prairie night.

Joe and Emma Leslie brought many beautiful things with them when they moved from the United States in 1911. This commode set is a highly decorative example of a typical bedroom accessory.
