According to Peter Hessel, portage des chats was so called because of the sharp rocks that filled the river and scratched, in a manner of speaking, the canoes of the voyageurs. However, Hessel also cites, in his book, "McNab, The Township", that Nicholas Garry, the Deputy Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, who went up the Ottawa in 1821, wrote in his diary that these "most frightful rapids" and the lake above them were so called from the quantity of raccoons, which formerly filled the adjacent woods.
