Sailor's Palm, used to sew or repair canvas sails
1910
Islands Museum, Tiverton, Nova Scotia, Canada

16

These illustrations of a "sailor's palm" show the most common, and necessary tool used by the ordinary sailor aboard a sailing ship. It was used to repair and manufacture sails. Its' special design allowed sailors to push the long needle, especially designed for canvas work, into the stiff fabric whose function was to propel them around the globe. The "hot spots" on the photographs give some additional information about the palm.

Used on small sailing boats, or row boats with a sail, the term for this is a "spoke shave". The tiller or rudder was inserted through the cut out section and attached to the stern of the boat. The fisherman was able to sit in the midsection of the boat and use the ropes as guides to turn the boat in the direction he wanted to go.
