On May 9, 1885 Dumont crippled the riverboat Northcote which had been outfitted to assist government troops. That same day, Middleton's first attack on Batoche was ambushed by the Métis in trenches and pits from within the settlement.

This is the Carlton Trail today where Gabriel Dumont and his men would have gone down to the river to stop the Northcote. This was accomplished by lowering the ferry cables so that the smokestacks were cut off.

A three day stalemate ensued. Métis ammunition was running low, they were out numbered and faced superior government weapons. Victory was conceded to the government forces on May 13, 1885.
