Larry Hayhearst, Restoration Group Volunteer, interview summary.
The most apprehensive highlight of the restoration involved having to remove the cab from the engine due to extensive, penetrating rust. A crane lifted off the cab and the base had to be rebuilt. Once the cab was off it became obvious that the mounts on the locomotive needed to be replaced too. Two years later when it was time to put the cab back on there were thirty-two bolts that would have to line up perfectly with the openings on the base of the cab. The moment of truth came when the cab was lowered. What were the chances their measurements would all be correct? Turns out every single one of the bolts fit. Not one hole had to be re-drilled. For Larry, who had worked so long rebuilding the cab, it was the highlight of the restoration.

Jeremy Schofield, Westfield Heritage Village train station interpretor, interview summary.
When people come to Westfield they often ask if the locomotive is the same one that they remember from Gage Park, the one they played on as a kid. There used to be a picture of 103 in Gage Park in the Jerseyville station and we'd point it out to them. Years ago when the 103 wasn't looking so good, with the cab and the boiler jacket off, they'd hardly recognize it. Now when I tell them, yes it is, they're really impressed with how good it looks and how great it is to stand beside it. They often comment on how huge it is and they have to be reminded that the 103 was only a medium sized engine compared to some of the biggest steam engines of its time.

On the May 24th weekend of 2005 a celebration was held in honor of the 103 and the crew that had brought it back from the brink. The heavy reconstruction was done and the locomotive looked like a million bucks, though it hadn't cost nearly that much.
