The Northern Railway Company was incorporated in 1874 to build a 26 mile long line from Richibucto to connect with the Intercolonial Railway line at Kent Junction. Construction began in 1881 and was completed in 1883. An extension of the line was built to Saint-Louis-De-Kent sometime around 1885, by persons involved with the Kent Northern Railway. Initially profitable, the line had difficulty making loan payments, despite strong passenger and freight traffic. Due to these problems the line changed owners several times over the next decades until 1903 when it was reorganized as the Kent Northern Railway Company. Between 1902 and 1906 freight tonnage on the line increased from 4,000 to 95,000 tons (mostly gravel). The line continued to turn a profit until 1922. From then on the line continued losing money until it was taken over in 1929 by Canadian National who operated the line until it was abandoned in 1989.
