Each King Trapper event offers prize money for first, second and third place finish. For the Marathon Snowshoe Race prize money was available for the first five contestants: 1st - $200, 2nd - $150, 3rd - $75, 4th - $50, 5th - $25. The Queen Trapper

On many traplines, women participate in operations as vigorously as their male counterparts. In honour of this fact, the Queen Trapper event was introduced in 1977. Winning competitors in the Queen Trapper contests also receive cash prizes, but they are lesser amounts than the King Trapper winners.

Some of the contests for the QueenTrapper competition include: wood splitting, flour packing, trap setting, tea boiling, fish frying, bannock backing, moose calling, goose calling, and snowshoe race.

In the 1970 October issue of National Geographic, the Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival is mentioned in the article "Canada's Heartland, the Prairie Provinces" by W.E. Garrett. Included are images of participants competing in some of the King and Queen Trapper events.

Junior King Trapper and Junior Queen Trapper

The Junior King and Junior Queen events have been introduced in later years of the Festival. Youth that have the skills required for the trapping lifestyle compete to prove their prowess to appreciative judges and on-lookers. Participating youths are between the ages of 12-17 and compete in many of the same events that are required of the King and Queen Trapper contestants. They must display good sportsmanship and keep their language respectable [which can be difficult with a trap closing on your fingers!]. These young people put on a great show during the Festival, adding a youthful vitality and helping to keep northern traditions alive.
