War Guests

The onset of war in Britain forced many parents to send their children to safer environs. Many came to 'foster' homes in North Toronto - and some ended up as either day students or boarders at Havergal College. Despite already crowded conditions at the school, by 1940, fifty-three English children were enrolled as day students and an additional twenty-seven entered the boarding school. A later article in the Havergal Chronicle enthused: "At least eighty-four parents, beset with worries enough, know that their children are safe, eighty-four children walk our lighted bomb-free streets."

By 1941, 110 British girls had joined the 600 students already enrolled at Havergal.

Life on Avenue Road

By 1942 the war hit close to home when the Jarvis St school was taken over by the government for use as a training facility for the Women's Air Force. By then, however, the 'New School' in North Toronto was the main school for students. While the war effort permeated all facets of school life, much also went on as usual.

Mary Grace Rolph Wright (class of '44) recalls the school schedule in the early 1940s: "We had the usual prayers every morning and then classes started I think at about 9. Recess was at around 10:30. Lunch was an hour and a half, 12 - 1:30, I guess. Then we finished school at 3:30. It's the same as it is today, really and truly."
