lay Cochrane joined the Canadian Forces Primary Reserves in Brandon, Manitoba in November 1990. He joined the 26 Field Regiment RCA and served as an Artilleryman.
Between September 1992 and February 1993, he was deployed with the 1 RCHA on peacekeeping duty in Cyprus for 6 months.

Clay was employed in an Infantry Section and spent four months in Observation Post and two months in the Quick Reaction Force. On his return, he continued to serve with 26 Fld Regt RCA until 1997 and then volunteered to serve 2nd Battalion Transport where he was deployed from February to July 97.

Upon return, he transferred to the Regular force and moved to 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in Shilo, Manitoba. He first served in "B" Battery but was moved to "A" Battery since the Korean War. Clay was employed as the Battery's Recce Technician from April - Sept 2000. On return, he transferred to HQ Bty and the Regiment Command Post as a Signaller.
In June 2001, he was promoted to Master Bombardier and became the Regiment's Training NCO and Regimental Command Post Supervisor.

In summer 2003, he moved to Gun Bty as Detachment Commander.

Clay served in Afghanistan.
