Edwy, was the oldest boy of the family and shouldered much of the farming responsibilities. From the day that they arrived on the prairies he proved that he was a hard worker and accompanied Percy back to Curries landing to retrieve the remainder of their belongings. On his first attempt of ploughing alone he satisfied Percy's expectations and was entrusted to plough for a neighbour. Percy called Edwy 'The Boy', and of his thirteenth birthday he wrote:
"July 31, 1884 - Edwy's Birthday - age 13- good boy - and always trying to be useful".

Harry was also a natural on the farm, mastering the art of ploughing by the age of 13. Due to Edwy being heavily depended on the home farm, Harry found work helping other farmers earning money or sometimes in return of a favor for Percy.

Harry enjoyed shooting and once he and Edwy entered a shooting competition in Douglas. Harry won three of the six categories that he entered winning 3 turkeys and Edwy winning the category that he entered, also winning a turkey.
When there would be a tennis tournament at St. Albans Harry would pick a selection of his finest roses and present each lady with it as is own act of hospitality.
