The Museum of Indian Archaeology began plans for extensive excavations and the reconstruction of the Lawson village site in 1976 under the direction of Dr. William D. Finlayson. Finlayson conducted an archaeological field school on the site in 1976, and Dr. Robert J. Pearce directed full-scale excavations from 1978 to 1980. Limited excavations have continued to take place on the Lawson site since 1981 through the Museum and field schools offered to students in the Anthropology Department at the University of Western Ontario.
