The Port of Port Moody
Military Presence
1
While Port Moody is not known for having a strong military presence, the city and its surrounding area does have a military history. In the mid-late 1800s, when British navy ships came up the inlet, they would fire cannonballs into Port Moody's north shore Naval Reserve as target practice. Some of these cannonballs have been found in backyards and are now housed in the Port Moody Station Museum.
The port has also hosted other military vessels, mainly for refuelling including gunships and a World War One submarine, which was first brought to the navy base at Esquimalt during the height of fear that German conspirators were planning on attacking the base.
More recently in 2010, the port welcomed navy ships visiting to celebrate the Navy Centennial.
