The ups and downs of the decade from 1920 to 1930, (although the ups were nothing like the distinguished era of the turn of the century) showed promise in slow but steady growth. Forestry was strong. Farming, in spite of feeling the pressure of earlier harvesting in the Okanagan, still awarded some profit. Mills included Wasketts and Simpson in Arrowhead, a mill at Pingston, the White Pine and Carlson mill in Nakusp. The Waldie mill in Castlegar, and many smaller operations. Poles were being processed at Arrowhead, Nakusp and Wesley along with a poleyard and mill at Summit Lake.
Fairs, now being held in nearly every town, became a classic event in Nakusp where a large building was erected just for their fall display. Due to its size it doubled as a hockey and skating rick every winter.
Roads were completed to Nelson and Vernon putting more pressure on the CPR to compete in the transportation field. Again the geographic structure of the Arrow Lakes forced the CPR to maintain service. Something Fred was glad of.
