According to legend, Jacques Cartier, while sailing up the coast of the Bay of Fundy exclaimed "Chapeau Dieu", or cap of God, when he saw the peak of Shepody Mountain break through the fog around its base. He was only one of several children. He moved to Acadia as a young man when he was offered a piece of land in a Seigneury. A Seigneury is a section of land granted to a Lord by the Government, the tenants of this land are required to pay rent to the Lord of the estate, hence the term landlord. Pierre was known as a hard working and adventurous young man. Pierre was known as a hard working and adventurous young man. Pierre Thibodeau, a miller by trade, moved to Port Royal in Nova Scotia and by age 40, as is shown in the census of 1671, was married to Jeanne Terrian, an Acadian.<br /> <br /> In 1698, at the age of 67, he left Port Royal to found a new settlement. His goal was to establish a Seigneury before he died. He took 4 of his sons with him, Peter, John, Antoine, and Michel, along with one of their friends, Pierre Gaudet. They traveled on a boat, which <!-SCT-->Pierre had built himself, in search of a place to begin a new settlement. First they traveled up the Bay of Fundy, staying to the west side and passed by the Chipody River. Then they went up the River Petitcodiak, and on to the River Memramcooke but decided the best place to settle was along the Chipody River. Thibodeau headed back to Port Royal with two of his sons to bring more supplies. The remaining men stayed to cut wood and make a shelter for supplies. <br /> <br /> On his return trip to Port Royal, Thibodeau met the Governor, M. Villebon, and informed him of the new settlement. The Governor approved the plan and encouraged Thibodeau in his work. When Thibodeau returned to Chipody, Guillaume Blanchard and his two sons, also residents of Port Royal, decided to return with him, to begin a separate settlement. Blanchard eventually chose a piece of land further up the Petitcodiac River from the Chipody settlement, he named the settlement <!-SCT-->Petitcodiak. The village of Hillsborough is now located where the Blanchard settlement was established.<br /> <br /> In July, Thibodeau returned to the Chipody settlement with flour, tools, oxen, a horse, and seed, along with more young men. That summer, the group built a place to live, a stable and barn, and cleared land for planting wheat. As religion was a very important part of the Acadians' lives, mass was celebrated each week in the new settlement, led by Thibodeau, as he was the most senior person present. The group also got to know the Indians that lived in the area. Over the next few years, the Indians would teach the settlers about trapping animals and the two groups often joined together for celebrations and feasts.<br /> <br /> That winter the supplies were left in a shelter for the winter, in the care of the Indians, when the Acadians returned to <!-SCT-->Port Royal for the winter. Thibodeau did not want word to spread about the satisfactory conditions that they had found to start the settlement, but Blanchard told the Acadians of Port Royal about the land, making many of them want to follow the settlers. They returned with new supplies in the spring of 1699, and continued ploughing, planting, digging ditches, and making aboiteaux, to keep the salt water off of the fertile marsh lands. The following winter Pierre left three of his sons to take care of things in Chipody and to continue the fur trade. He returned to Port Royal to a controversy over who owned the land on which he and Blanchard had begun their settlements. The son-in law of the Seigneur of Beaubassin, M. DeLaValliere, thought that everything that touched the basin belonged to the Seigneur. Thibodeau and Blanchard argued that the Chipody and Peticoudiak Rivers were separate from the Beaubasin Seigneury, but the other side argued that they had always considered the land <!-SCT-->theirs and had done fur trading there in the past. Discussions lasted throughout the winter, then broke off as the Seigneur would not agree to a compromise. Work continued that spring growing more crops, digging ditches, making aboiteaux and building a dam on which to put the mill.<br /> <br /> In all of this work, Thibodeau was thought of as the leader and instructed the people where to build and what work to do. Many of the young men who came from Port Royal to help with the work, also picked out the land that they wanted to build their homes on when they were married.<br /> <br /> In the fall of 1700, buildings were up and occupied, 44,800 feet of aboiteaux and ditches had been built along the marsh, and the mill was operating. Because of their close proximity, the Thibodeau and Blanchard settlements often got together for parties or feasts and shared any news that they received from Port <!-SCT-->Royal.<br /> <br /> By the next spring, many things had started to come together in the settlement. The settlers had flour and lumber from the mills, milk and butter from the cows, one crop of oats harvested, and they had collected sap for making maple sugar. However, despite these successes they still had to hunt and fish to provide enough food to eat. They also made their own Acadian drink called Spruce beer, from the fermentation of spruce boughs. There were a total of 18 people at the Chipody settlement including some of the young men who by now had married and had begun building their houses on the lots they had chosen. Among them were Jacques Martin and his wife who lived in a house along with her parents. His wife was pregnant and would give birth to the first baby in Albert County of European ancestry. Her father, Jean Brossard, and his wife were so captivated by the land, that they too began to clear land at Chipody. Two of Jean <!-SCT-->Brossard's sons married daughters of Pierre Thibodeau and lived in the Shepody settlement. One of Jean Brossard's sons, Joseph Brossard, who would later call himself Beausoleil, became a hero to the Acadians during the Acadian Expulsion. <br /> <br /> When Thibodeau returned in the spring of 1702, he was treated as the guest of honour by the settlement. Muskets were fired in celebration and he was given porcelain collars by the Indians. The settlement he returned to was full of activity. At this time five farms had been built. Sugar camps and the mill were running. Wheat was planted, cattle were being raised and there was always ongoing labour. As Thibodeau was getting quite old, he had to decide what he would do with this land. He decided not to divide up the land, but to give it to his oldest son, Pierre, who he felt was best prepared to take over the responsibility. He also arranged a marriage between his youngest son <!-SCT-->Charles, and the daughter of Broissard, the wealthiest and most well known of the tenants of the Seigneury.<br /> <br /> New settlers were eager to follow Thibodeau to the new settlement as they had a great respect for him. He was "a man well-known and well reputed; he was esteemed for his ability and his wealth." By the spring of 1702, the two Acadian settlements had grown to a total population of 48 inhabitants, 33 of which lived in the Chipody settlement. During the summer the two groups would get together, often on Sundays, when the young wives would gather around the dykes, or for an evening at someone's home.<br /> <br /> That summer a party was given when the hay was harvested. Thibodeau, age 72, along with his wife and their future daughter-in-law, rode on top of the last hay wagon pulled by four oxen as the settlers followed behind, shouting <!-SCT-->and laughing. The celebration included a picnic feast on the lawn of one of the families.<br /> <br /> Thibodeau left Chipody a few days later. He returned to Port Royal in August to news that war had broken out. Thibodeau had suspected that war would break out and had already stocked up on supplies for the settlement. He had built a storage building, to store the extra supplies, in the middle of the woods to prevent the English from finding them. <br /> <br /> In March of 1703, news came that the Council of State had granted title to the lands of Chipody and Peticoudiak to the settlers, but judgement on the question of seigneurial rights was reserved.
