Julia's Diary entry from February 21, 1885
February 21, 1885. Last night we went to service but nearly all the people were down at the dance so the minister preached a short sermon and then went down to the dance. He wanted Mr. Smith to let him preach there too, but Mr. Smith said he couldn't. We met Mr. Chalmers at church and he wanted us to go to the dance. Papa did not want us to but at last he let us. We walked home (3 miles mind you) at two o'clock.
