Busy Past, Bright Future: Healthcare on Bell Island

TRANSCRIPT

Transcription of Arthur Morgan sound clip:

'We are working towards the goal of achieving education for the public through meetings with the Wabana Council and educating the council on healthy public policy, primary health care and how their decisions are going to impact the community's health. Whether it be with clean water, whether it be by cleaning up garbage and rats and things like that, whether it be about, you know, having nice environments for people like the playgrounds and things for kids to play in. So once the education piece, and it is an ongoing process, happens, the ultimate goal is to get to a point where people are thinking about health as not coming in to get what they want and then leave and then they'll be cured, but to be thinking about the bigger health determinates, for instance looking at illiteracy rates on Bell Island, and if they are higher then the average well lets put a program, lets lobby the government, lets do something to insure that people living on Bell Island to allow them to get a job or to get a better job, which will affect health. And social issues and social problems and all that kind of stuff so that's sort of where we are hoping to go at the health centre. It is moving forward as Eastern Health comes together, and I would predict that we are probably going to be established as a primary health centre.'
