'And there was a little store up there, just a little variety store. Of course at the time we didn't know it was a variety store. And these people sold everything. And there was a huge bunch of, a stem of bananas hanging up in that. We hadn't seen any bananas. I don't think that we had ever seen bananas before, because during the war years there was no bananas and by that time I don't think there were very many in Holland either after the war. And it was this thing of being able to buy a chocolate bar for a nickel and ice cream for a nickel. Why we thought it was the most wonderful place that we had come to. [laughter].'
