Lake Ainslie - The Settlers Story

 

 

THE MINISTRY OF THE CHURCH IN EAST LAKE AINSLIE The first Presbyterian Church was built around 1830-35. The present Presbyterian Church, thethird one, was built in 1880. In July 1927, The Alexander Grant Memorial United Church wasdedicated.In his book, The History of the Presbyterian Church in Cape Breton, the Rev. Dr. John Murray,(News Publishing Company Ltd., Truro, N. S.) states: "Lake Ainslie has given a large number ofyoung men to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church, more indeed than any other congregationon the island (Cape Breton )". Then he lists fifteen young men: Hugh Mac Millan, Donald Mac Millan, Duncan Mac Millan, Donald Campbell, AllanMac Kay, A.D., Murdock , Hector, Archibald, and John Y. Mac Kinnon, (all brothers), C. C.Mac Lean, John Mac Kinnon, Robert Mac Kinnon, A.D. Mac Kinnon, C.R. F. Mac LennanWhile both congregations are struggling to hold their own, nevertheless, the work of the Mastercontinues to move ahead in East Lake Ainslie, where, since 1925 it has given a further fourpeople to the Christian ministry, three men and one woman.The Rev. Dr. Archibald D. Mac Kinnon, a of Kirkwood, Lake Ainslie. He spent some timeteaching and then entered the ministry, graduating in 1925. He was ordained and inducted intothe Whycocomagh and Little Narrows Pastoral Charge in 1927. In 1947 Presbyterian College,Montreal conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of divinity. Then, in 1959, he was electedModerator of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. His long and distinguished ministry was allspent in Little Narrows- Whycocomagh.The Rev. Murdo Marple , a native of Scotsville, graduated from Knox College, Toronto, Ont. Hewas ordained and inducted by the Pictou Presbytery in the Hopewell-Eureka Pastoral Charge inMay 4, 1972. Following ministries in Nova Scotia, he is presently serving in Calgary, Alberta.The Rev. Janice A. Mac Lean, a native of East Lake Ainslie graduated in ministry from Queen'sUniversity, Kingston, Ontario. She was ordained by The Maritime Conference of the UnitedChurch of Canada in 1982, and was inducted into the Central Kings, Annandale Pastoral Chargein 1982. She has since ministered in Ontario, The Iona Community, Scotland, and Ein Kerem, (aRoman Catholic Convent), Israel. Presently she in Minister of Christian Nurture and Enrichmentwith The Maritime Conference of the United Church of Canada, Sackville, New Brunswick.The Rev. Adam Lees, unlike his predecessors, was not a native of Cape Breton. He was born andeducated in Scotland where he studied engineering. After a career as an Engineer Officer in theR.A.F. service, he emigrated to Canada in 1966. He settled in East Lake Ainslie in 1970. In 1985,he gave up engineering to enter the ministry of the Presbyterian Church. He graduated formMcGill University and Presbyterian College. He was ordained by the Presbytery of Cape Bretonin the East Lake Ainslie Presbyterian Church in 1988, and served in Montague-Cardigan Chargeuntil his retirement in Lake Ainslie.
