Greenbank: The Heart of Reach Township

 

 

To the Editor of the Observer.

A Convention of several of the temperance Societies of North Ontario was held at Greenbank, on the evening of the 10th inst., for the purpose of enforcing the laws with the regard to the sales of liquors. Mr. A.F. Horne was elected chairman. It was resolved that this organization be called the N.O. Temperance League, to be composed of delegates from all the temperance Societies in the riding.

Permanent officers were elected, as follows: - President, A.D. Weeks of Uxbridge, Vice President; D. Rose of Port Perry; Secretary, Geo. Flint of Greenbank; Treasurer, Jos. Watson, Greenbank.

Moved by A.D. Weeks, seconded by Geo. Flint, that the Secretary of the League communicate with the officers of the County and Township Agricultural Societies, calling their attention to the law prohibiting the sale of liquor on Fair grounds, and warning them that this league will rigidly enforce the law and prosecute any know violations. - Carried.

Moved and seconded that a Committee consisting of _____ _____ _____, be appointed to carry out the above resolution, and that the local Temperance Societies be requested to cooperate with said Committee. - Carried

Moved by G. Flint, seconded by J.W. Bettes, that each Society be requested to appoint a Vigilance Committee of three to watch Hotels and vicinity and prosecute for violations, acting as far as possible through the inspectors.

Moved by G. Ballard, seconded by A. Flewel, that the Secretary communicate these proceedings to the press. - Carried

Meeting adjourned, to meet at the call of the President.
