Speed, Brawn & Beauty: The History of the Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival

TRANSCRIPT

NS: Why do you thing it's been around for so long?

EJ: Well, it's something that related to us so much in those days because that was the form of transportation. In the winter it was the dogs until the horses began to take over; but that was the only way to travel in the winter was with the dogs. That's where, even in my work with Resources, we started with dogs, that was after the war and of course, the police used dogs. The fur traders used dogs and that's where we got the saying of a 'wind splitter" because when the snow was deep like you see it now, you'd have to break trail, you always tried to get somebody who was good on snowshoes to go ahead and we referred to them as "wind splitter" to keep ahead of the dogs.
