Speed, Brawn & Beauty: The History of the Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival

TRANSCRIPT

CJ: I've met him. No, I've met his son. Henry Fishman, no. He was a businessman in town and he got together with Mr. Trager, and Dembinsky, and some of the business leaders in the community. And they, when they first started it, they felt that they should have some break for the winter. And, of course, it oriented around business, too, because in those days, for instance, the fall trapping had been done, and then January was kind of, nothing moved. And now they'd be getting ready for the spring trapping and, of course, they'd have to replenish themselves with supplies and that. So it was a business venture also. But that's how I see it is that it was the Town Fathers felt that this would be a way of breaking the long winter up sort of thing. And, of course, during the War years, it broke, it quit. But then it came back again. But during the-- Baptiste Campbell was the first year at the-- called the Dog Derby. And it went from here to Flin Flon, I think. And then, I think it was his brother or Baptiste Campbell… have to refresh my memory on that. But then there was some other people like Emile St. Godard. He was a famous dog musher that, not only was he a famous dog musher here, but he also went to Lake Placid in New York and that's-- he got a gold medal for dog racing. A lot of people don't know that. And he also raced in Bonhomme Carnival in Quebec City and in New Hampshire and in the States and that, so he contributed a lot to the dog-racing era, and to The Pas, Manitoba.
