Speed, Brawn & Beauty: The History of the Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival

TRANSCRIPT

KH: For sure. How would they prepare the dog trails?
CJ: Well, to start the dog trails, they start off right as soon as they can with snow machines, and they make the trail. First of all, they have to design it, designate it so that they're not infringement on someone else's private property or whatever it is, or make the proper agreements with the people that their land they're going to cross. And then after that, they have to-- what they call-- groom the trail, and they have to build up the base and they have to, you know, use snow machines, bombardiers, and so on and so forth,
and drag it and that. And then, it's a lot of ..., it's very, very labour intensive. And then they have to set up the starting line and they get their little office booth, their portable office down there. And, indeed, it's a lot of work, and a lot of these guys, like Pitt Lambert and some of these guys have been doing it for years. And, yeah, without those guys, it would be very difficult to host the World Championship Dog Race.
