Speed, Brawn & Beauty: The History of the Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival

TRANSCRIPT

CJ: No, actually the races, I can remember, they always went out west on the west highway towards Saskatchewan. Spectators always drove along the highway watching them. As you're probably aware, it's not a very spectator-friendly sport because the dogs get distracted quite easily, but it always kind of went. They started them on the river and then sometimes the ice wasn't good, so then they start them down on Halcrow Lake, which they still do today. And in the old days they used to start right in front of the Opasquia Hotel, which is now the City Centre, I think… The Pas Centre, and they used to go right down Edwards Avenue onto the Saskatchewan River and go all the way to Flin Flon and back. And those were the days of Shorty Russick. But as far as I know in the old days, I think they even went to Big Eddy… yeah, they did. But the last years that I've been involved with, they've mainly just been going west here.
