Speed, Brawn & Beauty: The History of the Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival

TRANSCRIPT

CJ: Well in those days, they pretty well had the northern dog that were pretty well bred either from what we call the Siberian husky or the Malamute. Not so much the Malamutes but they had pretty well northern dogs that were short, blocky, and very, very strong, and maybe not as quick and fast, though I should be careful when I say that. But they were built for endurance. They were built for trails that weren't-- they had to break trail quite often-- and hauling large loads. And of course, then, since then they're come to be high-skilled techniques involved in operations where they begin breeding in the hound for speed and agility and that sort of thing, and that's of course changed now that they have sled dogs that probably weigh 25 pounds or 20 pounds. And that's progress and that's time and that's how the industry, the dog racing industry, has changed is because of the breeding.
