Speed, Brawn & Beauty: The History of the Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival

TRANSCRIPT

BO: But it was a lot easier in the old days to get yourself a team because there were so many trappers around. I remember watching Jack McPhail training for the Trappers' Festival; I used to go in the freight races all the time, and I needed one dog. I was one dog short, I had a small kennel and I needed one dog. And he said, "Come on, it's Sunday, we'll go and watch the dogs going across Grace Lake, they're going to the trap line, and let's see if we can pick out a good one". So we were sitting there with binoculars near the airport there, watching these dogs. There were 17 teams go by from The Pas, they were going out trapping. Each one of them had four or five dogs and we found one that we liked so waited until the next weekend and we went to Charlie Wilson's, he had a dog on the reserve, and I bought this collie dog for $20.00 plus a dog to replace him. And that was my leader for a number of years.
