Speed, Brawn & Beauty: The History of the Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival

TRANSCRIPT

BO: Streeper came down from B.C. and he's one of the top mushers in Alaska, and he came here and had crossed the grey hounds with German short-haired pointers and the English short-haired pointers. They are supposed to be faster and better and when I looked at the picture of his dogs and I looked at the picture of Emil St. Godard's dogs, he had hounds a long time ago, and I'm sure they were pointers of some sort. So it makes me wonder if the sport really changed that much or did the dogs really change that much or were they always around. Emil quit in '32 when the festival went down because of World War II so that breed was lost, it wasn't around anymore. And when we started up, we started up with the trappers and had dogs that were able to sleep outside; so they were heavier dogs. But as the guys were competing, of course you wanted to beat the next guy, so you'd try to get something faster and started bringing in hounds and now we've tried everything there is to try and just about everybody has some sort of hound. They're a smaller dog, they have longer legs on them, a longer body, so the sport has changed that way.
