When I came to Valemount in 1945, the first people I met were Ollie and Alice Mortenson. I had walked over to their store from the post office to ask directions. Other families in the area were: Kushnir, Frye, Atkins, McKirdy, Hargreaves, Gordon, Olexiuk, MacMillan, Basaraba, Bailey, Clausen, Cochrane, Griffin, Leary, Partridge, Blackman, Beeson, Chesser, Dahlberg, Williams, Carr, and Holmin. All separate families, right? Dead Wrong!!

Alice Mortenson was a Clausen. Her sisters were Ethel Holmin and Marion Dahlberg. Their brother Stan Clausen, was married to Mrs. Kushnir's sister. Mrs. Kushnir was related to the Olexiuk's from way back. Russell Clausen's wife Amie was Aimie MacMillan's daughter and Amie MacMillan was John Griffin's aunt. Anne Griffin was sister to Mae Frye. Louise Clausen married Frank Blackman. Frank's brother, Bill, was married to Ellice Cochrane. Ellice is a sister to Murray Cochrane. His wife Ishbel was a Hargreaves. Sophia

Hargreaves was a sister to Anne Chesser, also a cousin to Sandy MacLean's father. Sandy MacLean is brother-in-law to Harry Partridge. Thelma Partridge, wife of Jim, was a Long and sister to Tom Carr.

My brother Ralph Lebans married Mary Kushnir, My sister Doris married Jim McKirdy, I married Angus McKirdy and Les McKirdy married Ferne Leary. Subsequent additions to this extended family are: Osadchuk, Bailey, Moore, Alain, Atkins, Froescul, Cramp, Maxwell, Ellis, Andrist, Antoniuk, Bain, Beeson, Duncan, Balon, Graham, Williams, McKinnon, Craig, Kewko, Hystad, McCallum, Kruisselbrink, Hannis, Taylor, Olson, Hart, Paquette, Clark, Rose, Byford, Spurvey, Ford, Riding, Udell, Meersman, Deforge, Smith - to mention only a few, in case you are interested.
