The Catholic Mission: The South of the North Pioneers
Heritage Park
Fort McMurray , Alberta

The Mission also brought in
the Grey Nuns - an order of
women devoted to serving
northern frontier
communities. Here the Sisters
administrated the region's
first large-scale hospital
and taught at its first
Catholic school. The Nuns had
a long history of aiding the

poor and unemployed, and they
used their roles as nurses
and teachers in creative ways
to meet the community's
needs. These men and women
made Fort McMurray's last
century of growth possible.
