largely vacant from 1974 to
1997, in actuality the
building was a hotbed for an
emergent artist-run culture.
It was the site of
groundbreaking artistic
production and presentation
at a time when cheap rent in
Gastown's old buildings drew
young and experimental

artists to the neighbourhood.
   - During the late 70's,
it is rumoured that renowned
artist, Jack Shadbolt
utilized the space, but we
cannot find proof of his time
in the building, so it will
remain a whisper in 88's
interesting history.
   - The artist collective

Futura Bold was formed while
renting 88 East Cordova as a
studio in 1984-1986. Founding
members Graham Gillmore,
Angela Grossmann, Attila
Richard Lukacs and Derek Root
later became internationally-
recognized artists.
   - Sharing their studio
was artist Susi Milne, the

Western Front's video and
performance art curator at
the time. Her storyline in
our exhibit offers a unique
insight into Vancouver's
early days of video and
performance art, as well as
luminary, Douglas Coupland
who later joined forces with
the Futura Bold.
