English Garden Community to
the interior of the island.
Rock walls were constructed;
an Edwardian country house
was built for the owners;
Lady Northcliffe had a
hospital bearing her name
constructed; schools were
built; doctors, nurses,
teachers and many other

professionals were brought to
the town and were paid wages
by the company. Surrounding
communities benefitted as
well because there was a
great need for loggers and
contractors in the interior,
stevedores and sailors at the
shipping port of Botwood, and
engineers and trainmen for

the rail system shunting the
paper rolls. The exhibit
will show how the Harmsworth
were responsible for
developing not only Grand
Falls but surrounding
communities as well.
   The Harmsworth Legacy can
still be seen in the Valley
through the various

communities which still exist
and thrive. Corporate
responsibility was an
integral part of the
Harmsworth plan. This will
be shown in this virtual
exhibit through photographs
of artefacts, and through
their stories which capture
the generosity of the
