It should be remembered that
the artist enjoyed
distinction as a professional
china painter before her
marriage to John Hagen. Thus,
she is referred to as “Alice
Egan” in texts chronicling
her life before 1901; after
her 1901 marriage, she signed

herself “Alice M. Hagen” and
is referred to as “Alice
Hagen.”
