Glorious Glass: Wallaceburg the Glass Town of Canada

different bottles as well as
chimneys for lamps and
lanterns, globes for street
lights, canning jars,
dinnerware, ash trays and an
array of other products. In
their spare time, many
glassblowers fashioned
special pieces of glass for
their friends and family

called whimsies. Crafted at
the "whim" of the
glassblower, the most common
examples of Wallaceburg
whimsies included walking
canes, hatchets, hammers,
paperweights, pipes, glass
chains, swords and swan
figurines.
   During the Second World

War the town of Wallaceburg
rallied to support the troops
overseas and employees of the
Dominion Glass Company were
no exception. The factory
assembly lines proudly turned
out glass battery containers
for submarines, ashtrays for
military bases and beer
bottles for the warfront.

Support for the troops did
not falter when the war
ended. Hundreds of Dominion
Glass Company workers joined
a volunteer initiative to
build Wallaceburg Memorial
Arena in honour of the town's
fallen soldiers.
